The Kickelhahn

In Ilmenau, it's a tradition for students to hike up the Kickelhahn at the beginning of their studies and the breathtaking view from 861 metres above sea level was once appreciated by the famous German poet and natural scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. According to legend, you must hike the mountain at least once to successfully complete your studies!

Its location on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest makes Ilmenau an established sports centre. Hiking enthusiasts and mountain bike fans get everything they need. In winter you can ski, ice skate, bobsleigh or play ice hockey, for example. With courses in around 90 sports, a sports field, fitness rooms and a climbing wall the University Sports Centre offers varied opportunities for fitness, fun and relaxation.

In addition, Ilmenau is well known for student’s associations and communities that actively influence life on campus. Besides the oldest student radio in Germany there is a Formula Student racing team, cinema club, big band, student consulting and a lot more. In this way, you too will find a perfect balance to the cognitive challenges of everyday study and you will make new contacts very easily.
